Just yesterday, popular smartwatch maker Pebble introduced a new Pebble smartwatch called the Pebble Time Round. As the name suggests, the third smartwatch to join the Pebble Time line has a round face instead of the square one that both the Time and Time Steel exhibit. The Pebble Time Round is also touted as being the thinnest and lightest smartwatch in the world.

The new design looks sleek, and I’m sure many will find the Pebble Time Round to be more comfortable and fashionable than the current Pebble smartwatch lineup; however, it is important to note that the new makeover also comes at a cost. In fact, probably the most important advantage that Pebble has over other smartwatch competitors is compromised in the Time Round.

Instead of the week-long plus battery life offered in other Pebble smartwatches, the new Pebble Time Round will only last you around two days, give or take, on a single charge. And honestly, I think at the end of the day that’s going to be what kills it for a lot of people.

Round smartwatches aren’t anything new at this point, so I imagine this new design is simply to cater to those who prefer the look of a traditional smartwatch. But since this is coming from Pebble, I think what would have made this a truly great product would have been to keep that same remarkable battery life that Pebble has always been known for. I actually find it quite disappointing that Pebble has already gone in the opposite direction of where these products need to be going at this point in time by focusing on thinness and weight.

It’s understandable that thin and light is the preferable size for this particular gadget. Since it’s on your wrist all day, it makes sense that you’d like for it to be as unnoticeable as possible. But given where technology is at right now, making it so light and thin that you’ll need to charge it every other day just trades one hassle in for another.

Granted, there are still some benefits to going with Pebble (even the Time Round) over the competition, such as being sold at competitive pricing and having Pebble OS, which many people find they prefer over Android Wear or Apple’s watchOS. And, admittedly, it does look pretty nice, and comparable to a good old fashioned wrist watch.

At the end of the day, it simply comes down to what’s more important to you: awesome battery life or an arguably sleeker design. Personally, I’m not sure the Pebble Time Round does anything better than the other round smartwatches on the market other than being thinner and lighter, and it’s way too expensive (in my opinion) for what’s being offered. You get a bigger bang for your buck by going with just about any other Pebble smartwatch.

For what it’s worth, though, I still think Pebble is a really cool company, and they clearly have their customer’s best interests in mind. People who have recently backed the Pebble Time Steel may be upset to find out about the new round form factor, but Pebble has a pretty sweet gig for any backers who want to try or switch to the Round.
