Remember the Xiaomi Mi Mix Alpha? We haven't really heard anything about this phone with a wraparound screen since its announcement last September, but today we're getting a good look at the device in action.
Xiaomi's Mi Mix Alpha is the star of a new hands-on video from MKBHD that shows off the hardware and explains what it's like to use a phone with a wraparound display. That screen is a 2088x2250 OLED display that's said to be about the size of the iPhone 11 Pro Max, which has a 6.5-inch display.
You might think a phone with a wraparound display would be tough to handle, but MKBHD says that it's not as slippery as you might think. The palm rejection is said to be "hit or miss", though, and the virtual power and volume buttons on the right side of the screen are described as "pretty bad". This is still a concept phone, though, and so those things might be improved on a device that saw full production.
The side of the Mi Mix Alpha's display also shows you the time, status bar icons, and notification count, giving the front of the screen more of a clean look. And when you flip the phone around, the Mi Mix Alpha senses it and will show you widgets, a timer, the weather, and more on the back of the display.
The back of the screen also functions as a viewfinder for the camera. Since there's no front camera, you can use the Mi Mix Alpha's 108MP main camera for your selfies and the back of the screen will help you take them.
Those cameras are covered by sapphire glass and live in a ceramic strip, helping to give the phone a more premium feel.
One other detail worth noting about the Mi Mix Alpha is that the display cover isn't one whole piece of glass, but is actually three different pieces of cover glass with small gaps on the sides.
As you might've guessed from its design, the Mi Mix Alpha isn't a phone that's going to be widely available. Xiaomi said last year that the concept device would only see "small-scale production" beginning in December. Those lucky enough to have the opportunity to buy a Mi Mix Alpha had to pay a premium to actually own it, because the phone cost 19,999 RMB ($2,860 USD).
Because of its limited availability and high price, it's unlikely that most of us will ever get to handle a Mi Mix Alpha and try its wraparound screen for ourselves, which is why this new video is worth a watch.
If you had the chance to buy a Xiaomi Mi Mix Alpha, would you do it?
