Earlier this year, Huawei tried to one-up Samsung by unveiling its own foldable smartphone, the Mate X. The best part of all that was the fact that Huawei didn't just copy Samsung and call it good, opting to utilize a different foldable design than what the company's primary competition will be using. Hopefully we'll see even more exciting designs down the road, but, for now, it's Samsung and Huawei leading the charge.
A delayed charge, sure, but a charge nonetheless.
Delayed because both companies' flagship foldable smartphones have been just that. Samsung ran into some major display issues right out of the gate, and, as a result, the company's first foldable device won't see the light of day until sometime in September at the earliest.
Meanwhile, Huawei initially planned to launch the Mate X sometime in the middle of 2019, but then delayed the handset until September, too. Now, halfway through August and Huawei has let the world know that it's not possible for the Mate X to launch in September after all, and the company is basically aiming to release the foldable phone before the end of the year.
Neither one of these phones are cheap. And both companies haven't been shy about the fact that it will be a new experience and maybe there might be issues. That's one of the reasons why I'm waiting before jumping on this particular bandwagon, and not just until later this year, either. I'll get my first foldable phone when the kinks have been ironed out, basically.
But the Mate X will more than likely still launch later this year, as long as Huawei can stick to the plan. When it arrives you'll need to fork over $2,600 to make it yours. So that early adopter urge in you will have to be pretty strong, to say the least.
