We've heard that Huawei has been building its own operating system, and it's been said that Huawei would use it as a replacement for Android if it ever lost access to Google's mobile OS. Now, though, Huawei says that its OS isn't an Android replacement.

Catherine Chen, Senior Vice President at Huawei, says that the OS known as Hongmeng is not meant to be an alternative for Android and is not meant for smartphones at all. Chen went on to tell Xinhua that Hongmeng is actually intended for industrial use.

As for finding a replacement to Android, Chen said that Huawei intends to continue using Android for its smartphones.

Earlier this year, Huawei CEO Richard Yu suggested that Huawei had built its own OS in case it was no longer able to use Android, but now the company says that the Hongmeng OS actually isn't intended to replace Android. Whatever the case, it's no surprise that Huawei would prefer to keep using Android, which is an established OS with lots of existing apps and users.
