Google is making it better to use truly wireless earbuds on Android.
The company today announced improvements to Fast Pair, its set of specs for connecting Bluetooth headphones and speakers to Android. Perhaps the most notable is better system-wide support for truly wireless earbuds. Later this year, truly wireless earbuds that support Fast Pair will be able to have their individual battery levels shown on Android as well as the battery level of their case and battery notifications when the case is opened or closed.
Also coming is support for Fast Pair devices appearing in the Find My Device app and website. This will let you see the location and time that you last used your headphones. You'll also be able to unpair or ring them when you're in range.
Finally, Fast Pair devices will have an enhanced Bluetooth device details page in Android Q. This will show info like battery levels, device management options, important settings like the equalizer, and a shortcut to Find My Device.
Google has confirmed that these features will come to its Pixel Buds and Bose QuietComfort 35 II, as well as all of the following Fast Pair headphones that showed off at I/O earlier this year:
These Fast Pair improvements sound like great updates for anyone using compatible Bluetooth headphones. Since they're not attached to anything, it can be easy to forget or lose wireless headphones, which is where the new Find My Device features will come in. And the ability to see individual battery levels of truly wireless earbuds and their case is a nifty feature of Apple's AirPods that will be great to see on Android as well.
