The “affordable flagship” smartphone category has grown quite a bit lately, but a new smartphone in India takes the whole “affordable” part to a whole new level.
The Freedom 251 is a new Android smartphone that’s launching in India at a price of 251 rupees, or around $3.67 USD. That’s pretty cheap, and while the Freedom 251’s specs aren’t great, they’re also not bad for the price. The 251 is packing a 4-inch 960x540 display, 3.2-megapixel rear and 0.3-megapixel front cameras, a 1.3GHz quad-core processor, and 1GB of RAM. It comes with 8GB of built-in storage and a microSD slot for up to 32GB of more storage, and there’s a 1450mAh battery powering the whole package.
In terms of software, the Freedom 251 is running Android 5.1. It comes preloaded with popular apps like YouTube, Facebook, and WhatsApp, and its product page says that Google Play is included, too.
The Freedom 251 is launching in India this Thursday, February 18. There’s no question that it’s got a low-end spec list, but the purpose of the device is to help keep consumers connected at a super-low price. At 251 rupees/$3.67 USD, the Freedom 251 should help to connect a lot of folks that normally can’t afford smartphone.
