If it feels like it’s been a while since we’ve heard about a new Ubuntu phone, well, it’s because it has been. That’s changing today, though, because a new Ubuntu phone has been introduced, and it’s the most high-end Ubuntu handset yet.
The Meizu Pro 5 Ubuntu Edition runs the mobile version of Ubuntu on a 5.7-inch 1920x1080 AMOLED display, and it’s got an octa-core Exynos 7420 processor at its core. The Pro 5 also offers a 21.16-megapixel rear camera with laser-assisted focus, a 5-megapixel front camera for all of your selfie needs, and Hi-Fi sound. There’s 32GB of storage to hold all of your media, 3GB of RAM, and dual SIM slots. There’s no mention of the Pro 5’s battery capacity, but the Android version of the Pro 5 has a 3050mAh battery, so it’s likely that the Ubuntu Edition carries the same juice pack.
Two details of the Meizu Pro 5 Ubuntu Edition that we don’t yet know are its launch date and price. Canonical, the folks behind Ubuntu, says that this Pro 5 will be available for pre-order during MWC later this month, so we should learn more about the phone’s pricing and availability then.
The Meizu Pro 5 Ubuntu Edition has a pretty impressive spec list, especially when compared with the other Ubuntu phones that we’ve seen to date. It’s also a pretty nice-looking device. And while it seems unlikely that the Meizu Pro 5 Ubuntu Edition is suddenly going to turn mobile Ubuntu into a major player in the smartphone race, it should be a great option for anyone that’s already got an interest in the mobile flavor of Ubuntu.
