Following last week’s official Galaxy Note 7 recall announcement, Samsung today gave us an update on the exchange process for current Note 7 owners.
Samsung says that 500,000 replacement Galaxy Note 7 devices have arrived in the US and will be made available for exchange at carrier and retail stores by tomorrow, Sept. 21. Samsung is pushing a software update to these devices that will change the battery indicator from white to green so that consumers can easily identify the safe Galaxy Note 7 units.
An update is also being pushed to the potentially dangerous Note 7 devices that are still in the wild. This update will show a safety notice on the Note 7’s screen that urges owners to power down their phone and gives them instructions on how to begin the exchange process. The notice will be shown every time the Note 7 is powered on or charged.
The US CPSC and Samsung previously said that this recall affects one million Note 7 devices in the U.S., and this shipment of replacements covers half of those devices. Expect the other half to come along soon, as Samsung likely wants to get all of the potentially dangerous Note 7s out of consumers’ hands and get this whole situation behind is as soon as possible.
