Hours after Google began the official Android 7.0 rollout, they’ve announced the first big update for Nougat.
Google says that they’re “moving Nougat into a new regular maintenance schedule” over the next several quarters. The first maintenance update that’s part of that schedule is already being worked on, and Google says that it’ll be pushed as a developer preview sometime this fall.
As for what’s included in the update, Google didn’t get specific, but they did say that it’ll bring “continued refinements and polish.”
It might sound kind of weird that Google has announced a maintenance update for Android 7.0 before most folks have even gotten Nougat, but there are always people working to improve Android with stability and performance improvements. Google has already started work on polishing parts of Nougat that need it, and they’ll continue to tweak and improve the software in the coming days as it hits millions of regular users and they discover any issues that Google and their developer testers may have missed.
