Andy Rubin is often referred to as “the father of Android,” but we haven’t heard much about him in regards to Google’s mobile OS ever since he abandoned his position of head of Android in March 2013. Rubin has been busy investing in startups lately, but a new report claims that Rubin may be ready to come back to Android.
The Information claims that Andy Rubin is trying to launch “an Android phone company.” Rubin is reportedly working to hire workers to start this Android company, and he may finance it through Playground Fun, his startup funding group that’s raised approximately $300 million. It’s not known if Andy Rubin would actually lead this new Android phone company or if he’d simply provide the funds to start it.
Rubin helped to found Android Inc., the company that was purchased by Google, and so he’s an important piece of smartphone history. If he does indeed want to help start up a new Android phone company, I have a feeling that he wouldn’t have much trouble finding talent to join him. The question is that with the Android smartphone market being so saturated as it is, what would Rubin’s company do to make its device stand out?
