Given Verizon’s history with its DROID line of phones, it seems likely that we’ll get a new model or two this year. A new leak claims to have details on the two models that’ll arrive in 2015.
Sources speaking to Phandroid claim that Verizon is planning to launch two new DROIDs, a Motorola DROID Maxx 2 and a DROID Turbo 2, which lines up with a previous rumor. The MAXX 2 will reportedly be a version of the Moto X Play, which Motorola has said won’t be launching in the US. A DROID Maxx 2 that’s essentially a rebadged Moto X Play would make sense for a couple of reasons. Not only is the plain Moto X Play not coming to the US, but the device comes with a 3630mAh battery, which would be a good fit for the MAXX family of devices that’s known for having large batteries.
Meanwhile, the DROID Turbo 2 will reportedly be based on the Moto X Style. It’s unclear if the Turbo 2 will feature any beefed up specs over the regular Moto X Style, but the source of today’s leak does say that the Turbo 2 will feature an “unbreakable” Plastic OLED display. The Moto X Style has a more traditional LCD screen.
Verizon has released a fairly steady stream of DROID phones since the original Motorola DROID — remember that thing? — and so it’s likely that we’ll see some more DROIDs before 2015 is out. The Moto X Play seems a likely candidate for DROID-ification, and if the Moto X Style becomes a DROID as well, that could give Motorola a nice sales boost in the US since most consumers buy phones through their carriers.
Would you buy either of these DROIDs if this rumor turns out to be true?
