Samsung Pay is launching in the US on September 28, and when it does, it’ll have the support of several major credit cards as well as AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and US Cellular. Notice a name missing from that list of carriers?

Verizon Wireless says that it’s “in the process of evaluating Samsung Pay” and that it’ll keep us updated on any news about the service. At launch, Samsung Pay will work with the Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 edge, and Galaxy S6 edge+, all four of which are available on Verizon.

Exactly why Verizon is hesitating on its support for Samsung Pay is a mystery. The big red carrier is no longer involved with Softcard, the mobile payment service that it helped found in 2010, as Softcard was recently sold to Google. Verizon has agreed to preload Google Wallet — which uses Softcard tech — on its Android phones, but Verizon doesn’t really have a horse in the mobile payment race any longer, so it’s not clear how the carrier would benefit from not supporting Samsung Pay.

We’re still about a month away from Samsung Pay’s launch in the US, so perhaps we’ll see Verizon get on board with the service before then. Here’s to hoping that that’s the case so that we can avoid another situation like the one with the Verizon Galaxy Nexus and Google Wallet in 2011.
