Just a few days after Apple teased that pre-orders of the iPhone 5 "have been incredible," the Cupertino firm has decided to share some hard numbers with us. Apple has announced that iPhone 5 pre-orders hit two million within the first 24 hours of availability, which is double the amount of the iPhone 4S. Demand for the iPhone 5 has exceeded the initial supply of the devices, Apple says, and so while most customers will receive their device on September 21, some will be arriving in October.

AT&T this morning also talked up its own iPhone 5 sales, saying that Apple's new handset is "the fastest-selling iPhone the company has ever offered." However, AT&T didn't divulge sales figures for the iPhone 5.

The iPhone 5 handily beat out the pre-order numbers of its predecessors, including the iPhone 4S and 4, the latter of which saw 600,000 units pre-ordered in a day. If you'd like an iPhone 5 but aren't part of the two million pre-orders already placed, Apple will begin offering the device in its stores at 8:00 a.m. local time on September 21, so you could try going that route if you don't feel like waiting until October to get your mitts on the taller iPhone.
