Apple took the wraps off of the iPhone 5 at an event in California last week, and as expected, the handset uses new nano-SIM cards rather than the micro-SIM cards used by devices like the iPhone 4 and 4S. The iPhone 5 will be launching on September 21, but we don't have to wait that long to get a peek at the nano-SIM that the phone will use. PhoneDog reader Jorge has sent us a photo of AT&T's nano-SIM card for the iPhone 5, which takes up just a small portion of the full plastic card that it's attached to. As you can see in the photo, there's not much more to the nano-SIM than the gold contacts, with just a tiny bit of plastic surrounding the contact area.

The nano-SIM, which was standardized by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) back in June, measures 12.3mm wide by 8.8mm high and is 0.67mm thick, making it 40 percent smaller than a micro-SIM. Utilizing this smaller SIM card along with a new Lightning connector helped Apple to reduce the iPhone 5's thickness to 7.6mm and make more room for things like the device's battery. Currently the iPhone 5 is the only handset that accepts a nano-SIM card, but that'll likely change soon as manufacturers continue to search for ways to slim down their devices.
