Less than a week after we first got wind that Google Play gift cards were coming, they've finally been made nice and official with their own web page. The page explains that the gift cards will be available for purchase at RadioShack, Target and GameStop, adding that they're on their way to those outlets right now. Google Play gift cards will be available in denominations of $10, $15, $25 and $50, and once redeemed, the amount will be added to a user's Google Play balance. The maximum Google Play balance allowed for a user is $2,000. Cards can be redeemed either at play.google.com/redeem, while buying something through the Google Play website, while making a purchase through the Google Play store on a device or by using the "Redeem" option in the Google Play store on a device.
When it comes to restrictions, Google explains that the Play gift cards cannot be used toward the purchase of an Android app subscription, magazine subscription or any hardware or accessories. Google Play gift cards are currently only available in the U.S., and they can only be used on content that's sold in U.S. dollars.
Many Android users have been clamoring for gift cards for apps and other content for some time now, so it's nice to finally see Google go live with these Play gift cards. While it's kind of a bummer that they're U.S.-only right now, I'm sure that Google is working to spread its gift cards to other parts of the world as quickly as it can. Until then, any U.S. Android users can mosey on over to their local RadioShack, Target or GameStop to pick up a gift card of their very own. Any of you plan on buying one, if only to try it out?
