Despite the fact that Samsung has some of the most powerful Android-powered devices available for purchase, many consumers don’t see the company in the greatest light anymore. Especially by those who purchased a Galaxy S-branded device and expected to get an update to Android 2.2 before the end of 2010. Even those who expected to receive their update by the beginning of January have been left to wait, unless of course you’ve got yourself a T-Mobile Vibrant. But, a Samsung executive has come forward and “confirmed” that the Android 2.2 updates for the remaining Galaxy S devices on the major networks is “imminent.” Unfortunately, this may be too little too late.

With rumors flying for the last couple of months, all of which escalated into the idea that Samsung was literally holding software updates for their handsets hostage, a lot of Galaxy S purchasers were getting angry with the manufacturer. It was becoming a firm belief that the company cared only about selling phones, and not customer satisfaction after the fact.

The manufacturer has tried to remain relatively quiet on the topic, but it looks like the time for Android 2.2 to land on the rest of the Galaxy S-branded handsets may be right around the corner. The Samsung executive confirmed that the Android 2.2 update for Galaxy S devices on the major networks is imminent. We’ve seen the Android 2.2 updates for the Samsung Captivate (for AT&T) and the Epic 4G (for Sprint) pop up in the recent past, but both were pulled before wide adoption. Or any adoption whatsoever.

So while Samsung Vibrant owners have been enjoying Android 2.2 for about a month now, the rest have been left to wait. And I’m afraid that this is just too little, too late. Unfortunately for Samsung, the majority of damage has already been done. And, let’s face it – it’s not like they’re updating the Galaxy S line-up to Android 2.3.

I owned the Fascinate for Verizon for a little while, and loved the hardware. But it quickly became obvious that I wasn’t going to see an update to the software any time soon. And when Android 2.3 broke cover, I ditched the phone as a lost cause. I think a lot of Galaxy S owners have done that, if they had the opportunity. The Samsung executive also said that Samsung wants to stay competitive in the future, and will push out updates faster. So at least the company knows they screwed up this time around. Now we can only hope they fix the problem.
