Now that Verizon's mobile 5G network is live, lots of folks are wondering what its performance is like. Today some speed tests have come out that show us what the Verizon 5G network can do.
Several speed tests run on Verizon's 5G network show speeds as fast as 762Mbps. In the video below, you can see Verizon spokesman David Weissman running a speed test on Verizon 5G in front of U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. You can see the speed climb as the video goes on, and at the end the app reports a speed of 762.31Mbps. That's fast.
Thrilled to be in Minneapolis as @verizon 5G UWB makes history!

Other speed tests came out today that aren't quite as speedy as that one, but are still pretty fast. Engadget's Chris Velazco ran some tests and managed 592Mbps in one test and 550Mbps in another. In the same spot as the latter 5G test, a test of 4G LTE speed came finished at 170Mbps. Meanwhile, a speed test run by CNET's Jessica Dolcourt finished at 634Mbps.
These things have a mind of their own. Weird to see one Moto Z3 on 5G and another stuck on LTE while standing still under a node pic.twitter.com/iIYLxyXY86

When it launched its 5G network earlier this week, Verizon said that customers can expect typical download speeds of 450Mbps, which all of these tests handily beat. There are a few caveats to keep in mind when reading about these speed tests, though, including the fact that there aren't many people using Verizon 5G right now and that the network is currently limited to select areas of two U.S. cities, Chicago and Minneapolis, though Verizon has said that it plans to roll out 5G coverage in more than 30 cities in 2019.
Also of note is that Verizon only offers one 5G-capable smartphone right now, which is the Moto Z3 with the 5G Moto Mod add-on. Verizon has confirmed that it'll launch the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G, and rumors say that it could launch in May.
Despite all that, it's still exciting to see mobile 5G finally starting to roll out. When do you plan on making the jump to 5G?
