It’s flagship smartphone season, and today Huawei got in on the action by announcing the P8.
The Huawei P8 is the company’s new flagship Android smartphone with a premium metal unibody construction. The P8’s body measures 6.4mm thick, and while it offers a 5.2-inch screen, Huawei touted its body offers a higher screen-to-body ratio than the iPhone 6 and Galaxy S6, which offer 4.7-inch and 5.1-inch screens.
Huawei also took time at its event today to tout the P8’s camera. The rear shooter is of the 13-megapixel variety, but Huawei said that a camera is about “more than megapixels,” and so it’s included some other camera features as well. For example, Huawei says its four color RGBW sensor will offer higher brightness in high contrast situations and reduced color noise in low light. There’s also an independent Image Signal Processor for reduced noise reduction in low light and face detection, and optical image stabilization is included as well.
The full spec rundown for the Huawei P8 includes a 5.2-inch 1920x1080 IPS Neo display, 2GHz octa-core Kirin 930 processor, 13-megapixel rear and 8-megapixel front cameras, 2680mAh battery, dual SIM support, microSD slot, and Android 5.0 Lollipop running beneath a custom user interface. All of those features are packed into a body that’s 6.4mm thick.
The Huawei P8 will launch in two versions: a standard 16GB model that’ll cost €499 ($529 USD) and a “premium” 64GB model that’ll be €599 ($635 USD). The P8 will be sold in more than 30 countries, including China, France, Germany, Mexico, UAE, and the U.K. The Huawei P8 will be available in Mystic Champagne, Prestige Gold, Titanium Gray, and Carbon Black color options. A U.S. launch is not in Huawei’s plans, but the company does say that it will launch a more affordable version of the P8 in the U.S. soon.
Alongside the P8, Huawei also announced the P8max, which is a larger version of the P8. The Huawei P8max offers a 6.8-inch 1920x1080 display and a considerably beefier 4360mAh battery. Other specs for the P8max are similar to the P8, including 13-megapixel rear and 5-megapixel front cameras and an octa-core processor, though the P8max is a smidge thicker at 6.8mm thick. The P8max will be available in 30 countries at a starting price of €549 ($581 USD) for the standard model and €649 ($688 USD) for the premium model.
