Another one bites the dust. Just a few months after Bump was acquired by Google, the company has revealed that its information transfer app will soon be shut down.
Bump CEO David Lieb recently announced that both Bump and photo-sharing app Flock will be discontinued on Jan. 31. Once that date rolls around, the apps will be pulled from Apple's App Store and the Google Play Store and any existing installs will stop working. User data will also be deleted on Jan. 31, but anyone can easily export their data by opening Bump or Flock, following the instructions inside the app and then clicking on a link that'll be sent in an email.
In his announcement, Lieb explains the impending shutdown by saying that the Bump team is "deeply focused" on its projects at Google. While it's intriguing to hear that Bump is hard at work on something inside of Google, it's also kind of a bummer that that work is resulting in the shutdown of the Bump and Flock apps. Bump was one of the first big hits in the iOS App Store and made it easy for users to exchange contact information, files and photos by bumping their phones together. Here's to hoping that, whatever Bump is working on inside of Google, it's just as significant as the Bump app has been since its debut.
