So it's Saturday night and the world still exists. Why not celebrate by renting a movie from the Android Market? Hopefully you're not using a rooted device. If you are, you'll likely be met with an error message like this one: "Failed to fetch license for [movie title] (error 49)." That's because, as this Android Market help page explains, rooted devices are "currently unsupported due to requirements related to copyright protection."
Currently only devices running Android 3.1 can access movie rentals, so not many people will likely run into error 49. Once support for rentals rolls out to devices with Froyo or higher, though, there could be a bit more of an uproar. I'm sure that the decision to block rentals on rooted devices was a concession that Google had to make to get the movie studios to take part in the service, but it's still kind of a bummer. Of course, given how dedicated the Android hacking community is, I'm sure that a workaround will pop up eventually.
