Despite the fact that several builds of Android 2.3 for the Motorola DROID X have leaked out over the past couple of months, there's still been no word from Moto or Verizon on when the official update may roll out. It seems that the DROID X's update may finally be near, though, as Motorola has begun sending emails to owners of the device inviting them to take part in a mysterious "project." There's no indication as to what exactly this "project" entails, although one of the links that the invitees are being sent to is called "Droid X May 2011 update soak," suggesting that an update, possibly Gingerbread, may be pushed out before the month is up. The full email from Moto is as follows:
"Dear Motorola Owners’ Forums member,
We are preparing a project for Droid X owners and would like to invite you to take part. We are now opening the project for registration.
Please click this link to take a short enrollment survey if you are interested. Please note that this is a confidential project under the terms of the Motorola Feedback Network. Do not post any details or information about this project on any public sites.
At this time, there are few details to share, but if you register we’ll provide more information. If you have any questions, please e-mail me here.
Thanks again, and we hope to be in contact with you soon.

Obviously there's no guarantee that this "project" involves testing the DROID X's Gingerbread update, but considering how many 2.3 leaks we've seen lately and the secretive nature of this email, it doesn't seem like a stretch to think that DROID X GB goodness may soon be here. We'll be keeping a close eye on the situation, so stay tuned.
