It’s now been nearly two months since Samsung discontinued the Galaxy Note 7, and in that time, the company has continued to work to reclaim all of the Note 7 units in the wild. Now Samsung Canada will take a drastic step to gather the remaining units in its country.
Samsung Canada has announced that it plans to deactivate service on all Galaxy Note 7 units still in customers’ hands. As early as December 12, Samsung Canada will place a battery charge limitation on Note 7s in the wild, and it will also disable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity.
Three days later on December 15, Canadian Note 7s will no longer be able to connect to any cellular network, rendering them unable to make a call, send a text, or use data. In the event of an emergency, the Note 7s will still be able to dial 9-1-1.
Finally, Samsung Canada says that it has received nearly 90 percent of all Note 7 devices brought into the Canadian market.
Disabling the service on any Note 7s still in customers’ hands is a big step, but it’s an important one for Samsung Canada to take. The company recalled and discontinued the Note 7 to ensure the safety of consumers everywhere, and so it’s important for anyone that still has a Note 7 to turn their device in. To further push anyone still using a Note 7 to turn their device in, Samsung Canada will effectively turn their phone into an expensive paperweight.
