Ever since the Samsung Gear 360 was announced at MWC in February, Samsung has been rather quiet about the camera’s official launch date. That’s changing today, as we’ve finally got a public release date to circle on our calendars.
Samsung says that the Gear 360 will launch in the U.S. on August 19, the same date at the Galaxy Note 7 and new Gear VR. Pricing for the Gear 360 will be $349.99.
The Gear 360 uses two wide-angle 15-megapixel cameras to capture 360-degree photos, but it can also be used in single-lens mode to capture standard photos and video. The entire unit is IP53-rated for dust and water resistance, too, meaning that you can use it to capture your activities.
One thing to keep in mind is that it requires a Samsung device like the Galaxy S6, S6 edge, Note 5, S7, or S7 edge. That’s kind of a bummer, as the Gear 360 looks like a nice little 360-degree camera. Given how some members of the Android community like to tinker, though, I wouldn’t be surprised if someone comes up with a workaround to make the Gear 360 play nice with non-Galaxy phones.
