One of the most popular features of Snapchat is its stories, which let you share several images and videos in a row to let people experience your day. Apparently Instagram is a big fan of the feature, because today it announced a similar one for its own service.

Instagram Stories is now official. Stories will let you post as many photos and videos you want and add text, drawings, and emoji, too. The photos and videos that you add to your Instagram Story will disappear after 24 hours, and Instagram says that anything that you post to your Story won’t appear in your profile grid or your feed.

To view someone’s Instagram Story, you just tap on their profile photo. If someone has a new Story for you to view, they’ll have a colorful ring around their profile image. If you don’t want your Story to be available to everyone, you can set your account to private and your Story will only be viewable by your friends. You can also swipe up while viewing your story to see who’s seen each photo and video.

Instagram Stories will roll out to Android and iOS users around the globe in the coming weeks.

It’s kind of strange to see Instagram roll out an ephemeral story feature, especially one that’s similar to Snapchat. Instagram hasn’t really been about disappearing messages in the past, but I suppose maybe they didn’t want you to have tons of Stories piling up in your profile, especially as you got further away from the original date of those Stories.
