One year after the ZTE ZMAX launched on T-Mobile, the ZMAX 2 has been officially revealed for the other major GSM carrier in the US, AT&T.
The ZTE ZMAX 2 will launch at AT&T on September 25 for $149.99 without a commitment. Like the ZMAX before it, the ZMAX 2 boasts a large display, but the ZMAX 2’s screen has actually been downsized to a 5.5-inch 1280x720 panel rather than the 5.7-inch 1280x720 screen found on the OG ZMAX.
The Android 5.1-powered ZMAX 2 also boasts 8-megapixel rear and 2-megapixel front cameras, the latter of which is an upgrade over the ZMAX’s 1.6-megapixel front shooter. Inside of the ZMAX 2 is a 1.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon processor, 16GB of storage, a microSD slot, 2GB of RAM, LTE connectivity, and a 3000mAh battery. That’s a bit smaller than the ZMAX’s 3400mAh battery, but the ZMAX 2’s battery is removable whereas the ZMAX’s was not. So if you want to carry around an extra battery or two for swapping in when one dies, you can do just that.
At less than $150 without a contract, the ZTE ZMAX 2 is a noteworthy option for folks that want a big phone on a small budget. While its battery might be smaller than the original ZMAX’s, the ZMAX 2 offers upgrades in the form of a better front camera and a removable battery. Plus, the ZMAX 2’s 5.5-inch 1280x720 display shouldn’t be terribly demanding on its 3000mAh battery anyway. Oh, and the ZMAX 2 is launching at a price that’s $100 less than the original ZMAX, too.
