Google is well-known for its search and advertising capabilities; heck, it’s one thing that helped make Google what it is today. Now Google is going to start using its skills to help Android app developers.
Google is going to start testing sponsored app search results in the Google Play Store. The ads will look like regular search results, but they’ll contain a small yellow rectangle with the word “Ad.” Google says that a small set of users will begin to see the ads in the coming weeks. The initial ads will be from a select group of advertisers that are already running regular Google search ads for their apps.
These new Google Play Store sponsored app search results will serve as a new way for Google to make money from Android, and it could be a good way for smaller developers to get their apps right in the face of Android users. The good news is that the sponsored results are clearly identified as such, and it looks like they’ll only appear when you’re actually searching for an app.
