The long-awaited, much-anticipated over-the-air podcast downloads are now available via the latest 2.2 firmware update for iPhone!
I suffer from over-stimulation in New York City, and podcasts are my major meds. It's the best way to tune out the truck rumbling, honking, streetside fabulous talk and random cursing that assaults my ears on a regular basis. Now, I won't run out of podcasts to keep me level and sane when I'm around town. (There's music too, but I tend to get lost in my favorite tunes when crossing the street and forget to look both ways.)
Speaking of getting lost, the new update includes walking directions, public transit schedules, a spiffy new emailable "Share Location" feature and a nearly G1-like Google Street View. I say "nearly" because you can't get in your map like Android lets you do. That would've been sweet. Using the accelerometer to pan around (i.e., seeing the view move along with you as you physically turn around) was one of my favorite features of the TMo phone. Still, I'm glad to know what a destination looks like when I'm trying to find a new venue, so I'll happily take this tap-and-drag Street View mode.
There are plenty of other fixes, as well as Safari improvements, toggle mode for auto-text correction and the ability to rate apps upon delete. I think this update is a quantum leap forward for some of us in iPhone usability. Check it out for yourself and let us know what you think of it.
