AOL has launched the beta for AOL Sync, a new platform-independent, mobile-synchronization tool for calendars and address books.

Powered by Funambol, an open source mobile push-email and sync provider, AOL Sync offers two-way OTA ("over the air") synchronization, allowing users to wirelessly update their Microsoft Outlook contacts and calendars with their AOL accounts and mobile devices in real-time over the cellular network. Compatible devices include the iPhone, Blackberry and phones from Nokia, Motorola and Samsung, as well as Windows Mobile handhelds.

Sadly, the service doesn't provide email syncing yet, but this is a great first step. And it's still in beta, so who knows where it could go from here.
