Nvidia hasn’t made any official announcements regarding a follow-up to its Android-powered Shield gaming handheld, but some certification documents may have turned up details on just such a device.
An entry posted to the Global Certification Forum’s website reveals an Nvidia “Shield Tablet” that includes wireless connectivity. The GCF describes the device as a “notebook/tablet,” but no other details about this new Shield are given.
Earlier this year, a mysterious Nvidia tablet appeared on a benchmark site with the codename “Mocha.” The device is said to feature a 7.9-inch 2048x1536 display, quad-core Tegra K1 processor, 7-megapixel rear and 4.8-megapixel front cameras, 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage. As with the original Shield, this Mocha is said to be powered by Android, specifically the 4.4.2 KitKat flavor.
While it’s not clear if this Mocha that took the benchmark test is the same as this Nvidia Shield notebook/tablet, it does contain features that we’d expect to find in a new Shield device. It’s likely that Nvidia would give the device a super high resolution display to compete with the likes of the iPad Air and Samsung Galaxy Tab S, and I’d expect to see Nvidia’s new Tegra K1 chip make it into the device as well.
