So here we are, two days after the unveiling (and launch!) of HTC's brand new flagship device, the One M8. How are you feeling? Have you recovered enough from the Event? It's been a year since we've seen HTC take the stage and unveil something really, really awesome, so I can understand why you might need a few more days to really recuperate. You know, get your feet back on solid ground and all that.
So. Here we are. It's just a couple of days after the One M8's release, but just over a month since another big phone got the big unveil on a stage in a big city. (Multiple cities, actually.) Samsung. The company that many name when they're talking about Android in general, removed the curtain from their latest big-name device, the Galaxy S5. A titan in its own regard, Samsung has no intention in slowing down when it comes to the smartphone race, even if their plans are more iterative than ever before.
Let's just get the biggest difference out of the way, shall we? The HTC One M8 was unveiled two days ago, and you can already buy it. Samsung's Galaxy S5 was given the big reveal over a month ago, and you can't get your hands on it until early April.
Yes, there are more differences, but as far as I'm concerned that's the biggest one. The most important one.
Of course, when it comes to the consumer looking to get their hands on a new device, the specs matter -- probably, at least a little bit. Let's hope they do, or the manufacturers that are doing their best to shove all the cool stuff into their phones are wasting a lot of effort. Sales will speak volumes, of course, so we're just going to have to wait and see how it pans out for both HTC and Samsung in the next few months.
But, waiting isn't fun, so let's just go ahead and dig into it, shall we? Yeah, we're going to be dealing with a loaded question here, sure, but sometimes that's fun. Sometimes it's fun to have conversations about the phones that are going to inevitably climb the charts of our Smartphone Rankings, long before they get a chance to climb those ladders.
The war has officially started in 2014. It always starts this early, sometimes even earlier, but it's always right about now that the gauntlet gets tossed, and the proverbial fists start flying. (Let's keep 'em proverbial, shall we?) Samsung tossed their metal glove down with gusto over a month ago. Most recently, HTC managed to get an even bigger glove together, and they threw it down with a flashy, dot matrix accessory to go along with it.
So, now that both phones have been unveiled, I think I want to take a direct look at expectations, and how they were either met or crushed. We've got both devices to look forward to now, in an official capacity, and both of them were riddled with leaks and rumors before the official release. Now that we have them, so to speak in one case, we can officially compare them and see which one is best.
But, I'm not just talking about a list of specs here. That's all well and good, sure, and I know a lot of people would love to crown one device "better" than the other simply because those spec sheets exist. However, I want to make it a bit more personal to you. I want to know which phone is the best bet for you, and why. And yes, if you want to whittle it down to just the specs, that's fine, but I imagine that there's something more to it than that.
Maybe it's because you've been a Samsung fan since the Galaxy S II, or maybe it's because you prefer metal over plastic. Maybe you don't want to take a risk with the camera, or maybe you want to not be anywhere near TouchWiz. Whatever the case, I want to know the real reason you'd pick one of the handsets over the other.
So, tell me: Which one would you choose? HTC's One M8 or Samsung's Galaxy S5? But, more specifically, tell me why. That's the important detail, so don't skip it. Of course, if you don't plan on buying either one of them, then by all means tell me the reason behind that decision, too. Let me know!
