Back in the day when T-Mobile and MetroPCS were still separate companies working to become one, they named a handful of benefits that customers of both carriers would enjoy if their merger went through. One of the perks that was given for MetroPCS subscribers was a wider selection of hardware that would come with the switch to GSM service. Now, thanks to a leaked image, it looks like we've got an idea of when MetroPCS customers will be able to begin taking advantage of that particular benefit.
According to some internal documentation that's been shared by PhoneArena, MetroPCS customers will be able to utilize a new Bring Your Own Phone (BYOP) service starting June 12 that will allow them to begin using select unlocked GSM phones. The compatible devices include iPhones, Android products, Windows Phone hardware and some feature phones. It's said that no BlackBerry products are supported.
Customers that'd rather pick up a new T-Mobile-friendly smartphones on MetroPCS may be able to do just that soon, as some other leaked images have revealed two handsets that will reportedly be available soon. Both the LG Optimus L9 and Samsung Galaxy Exhibit are allegedly coming to MetroPCS shelves, but there's no word yet on exactly when they might launch or how much they'll cost when they do. Today's leak is the second time that we've heard rumblings about a MetroPCS-bound version of the Optimus L9, though, with the first coming late last month in the form of a leaked pair of renders.
While some of the finer details of MetroPCS's adoption of T-Mobile smartphones are still up in the air, both the BYOP program and the arrival of the T-Mobile-compatible hardware are pretty exciting for Metro customers. Both options give MetroPCS customers access to a much wider variety of hardware, including the iPhone and Windows Phone products, neither of which are currently available to MetroPCS subscribers. So long as this rumored June 12 BYOP launch date holds true, it won't be long before all of MetroPCS's plans are laid out, so stay tuned and I'll give you a shout once more details are revealed.
