Google first began taking pre-orders for its Glass Explorer Edition at last year's Google I/O, but because of the developer-focused nature of the event and the $1,500 price tag, not everyone was capable of reserving a Glass unit of their own. Fortunately, some folks that have already received their Glass have allowed us to live vicariously through them by sharing unboxing photos and some of the features of the unit itself.
The images you see above were posted to Google+ by Brandon Allgood and are meant to shown exactly what Glass owners will find when they open the unit's box for the first time. Included is a carrying pouch, a couple of attachable shade, microUSB cable, charger and the Glass unit itself. The item in the right shows the packaging itself, featuring just an "XE" (Explorer Edition) plastered on it.
A couple of other Google Glass users went ahead and started using their device right away and posted some details of what they found. For example, Cecilia Abadie found that she was able to send navigation information from her Android phone to her Glass unit using the recently-released MyGlass companion app. Matt Abdou has shared a video taken by Google employee Josh Armour that offers a first-person view of his go-kart race. The brief clip is available below.
Google dumped a bunch of Glass information on us yesterday, including a full spec list and an announcement that it would begin shipping out Explorer Edition units in waves to those folks that plunked down $1,500 at Google I/O 2012. Regular consumers will need to wait until sometime later this year to get their opportunity to buy some Glass, but Google has said that the final unit's price will be below $1,500, so those folks that have to wait will at least get a lower price of entry. The good news is that we're likely to continue to see photos and videos captured by Glass in the coming months, so anyone that's waiting for the public launch will be able to whet their appetite for Glass with that content.
