It's been a while since Jolla has given us an update on the development of its MeeGo-based Sailfish OS and the first handset that'll run it, but the company revealed today that it won't be long before it finally shows off the fruits of its labor. Jolla today confirmed in a statement sent to TechCrunch that it plans to unveil its first phone in May. A "pre-sales campaign" will kick off in mid-May, and while Jolla says that the exact details are still being hammered out, it does intend to have options for interested customers to "show [their] support and get something in return." Jolla plans to officially begin selling its first device in the second half of 2013.
Jolla is a company made up of former members of Nokia's N9 team as well as members of the MeeGo community. The firm has been working on its MeeGo-based Sailfish OS since late 2011, and last year it shared a hands-on video of what the software looked like up to that point. One of the main features of Jolla's Sailfish OS is its Pulley Menu, which allows users to access different options and settings within apps by pulling down on the screen.
We'll likely get another good look at Sailfish OS next month when Jolla introduces the first phone that'll officially run the software, and it'll be interesting to see what refinements Jolla has made to Sailfish OS as well as what hardware the company has chosen to run it.
