Just as rumored, Federal Communications Commission Chairman will officially be stepping down from his position. The news was revealed today on the FCC's website, as the agency has an event listing that says that Genachowski will make his plans official at a staff meeting that's set to kick off at 10 a.m. EDT. Genachowski will be stepping down at some point "in the coming weeks." There's no word yet on what he plans to do afterward or who his successor will be.

As noted last night, Julius Genachowski was first appointed to the position of FCC Chairman in June 2009. Genachowski has served as FCC Chairman during many major events in the wireless industry, including AT&T's attempted acquisition of T-Mobile, and more recently he weighed in on the recent DMCA change related to cellphone unlocking. He was also chair of the FCC when it was recently declared the most improved government agency by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management. What Genachowski's post-FCC life will hold is still a mystery for now, but more details about his plans officially step down from his role as chairman could be revealed at the staff meeting that'll be taking place shortly.
