With just 16 days to go before the BlackBerry 10 launch event, RIM is entering the home stretch before it finally unleashes its new mobile operating system into the world. To help prepare, the company recent held a BlackBerry 10 Community Port-A-Thon to help push develops to submit their applications for approval into BlackBerry World before BlackBerry 10's launch. Alec Saunders, VP of Developer Relations at RIM, has revealed that the 37.5-hour event finished with 15,000 apps submissions total.
To help encourage devs to take part in the Port-A-Thon, RIM offered incentives like $100 cash per approved app and entries into a drawing to win prizes like a BlackBerry Dev Alpha unit and a trip to a BlackBerry Jam Europe event. While the quality of the apps submitted is likely to vary, RIM's aim was to help grow interest in developing for BlackBerry 10 and to get as many apps ported/created during the event as it could, and the virtual pile of 15,000 apps that were submitted is something that both RIM and BlackBerry fans can get excited about.
