ASUS has done pretty well when it comes to releasing updates to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich to its devices, pushing upgrades to both the Transformer and Transformer Prime within the first couple months of 2012. Now an ASUS exec has said that the company is hoping for a repeat performance by being one of the first out of the gate with an update to the next major version of Android.
Speaking to TechRadar, ASUS corporate VP Benson Lin said that his firm is "close to Google." As a result of that relationship, Lin feels that ASUS could be part of the first wave of companies to offer an update to Jelly Bean, which is thought to be the codename of the new version of Android. The full statement from Lin:
"Asus is very close to Google, so once they have Android 5.0 I think there will be a high possibility that we will be the first wave to offer the Jelly Bean update."
As I mentioned before, ASUS has rolled out ICS to its users in a fairly quick manner, and it's good to hear that the company could do the same again with the next major iteration of Android. It's interesting to hear Lin refer to the update as "Android 5.0" and "Jelly Bean," both of which are rumored to be names belonging to the next significant version of Google's mobile OS. We'll have to wait for Google to officially spill the (jelly) beans before we know if that's actually the case, but given how limited it seems that Google's options are for a "J" dessert name, there's definitely a chance that we could see the company parking a jelly bean out on its lawn sometime in the future.
