Just last week, Verizon Wireless CEO Dan Mead mentioned that he was "very confident" that Apple would be creating some LTE-capable products, but he failed to get any more specific. Today the Apple LTE news continues and even gets a little more detailed thanks to China Mobile Chairman Wang Jianzhou. Speaking outside of a conference in China today, the exec said that “Jobs has expressed his interest in an LTE iPhone and is willing to start the development at an early date.” Unfortunately, Mr. Jianzhou didn't give any other details on the matter.
When the Verizon iPhone 4 was introduced, Apple said that it didn't bother to include LTE capabilities in the device because doing so would've forced them to make "design compromises" that they weren't willing to go through with. If Apple wouldn't include LTE in a phone that was released last month, it seems tough to believe that they'd do a complete 180 and throw the feature into the iPhone 5 that's likely coming this summer. This is especially true when you remember that Verizon's LTE network is still in its infancy and AT&T's won't even launch until the middle of this year. On the other hand, though, there will be LTE-ready Android phones coming soon (as long as the ThunderBolt finally comes to market soon), so including LTE in an upcoming iPhone may be something that Apple is looking into.
