Yesterday Eric Schmidt gave up a few details on the "I" version of Android, currently known either as Ice Cream or Ice Cream Sandwich, explaining that it would combine Gingerbread and Honeycomb to form one OS. Today another Googler revealed a little more about the next iteration of Android, adding more credence to Schmidt's claims that Ice Cream Sandwich will be a combo of 2.3 and 3.0. Dave Burke, engineering director for Android, said that Honeycomb's "Action Bar," which provides app-specific controls, will replace the "press and hold" gesture currently used on phones, except when it comes to dragging and dropping. Burke also said that the multitasking app switcher in 3.0 will make its way to phones, as will Honeycomb's "Hologram" look and feel.
While there's certainly nothing wrong with Gingerbread — except the fact that it's still only officially available on Nexus S — the news from the past couple of days has me looking forward to Ice Cream Sandwich and to see exactly how Google manages to mash together 2.3 and 3.0. Plus, I'm a pretty big fan of the new app switcher found in Honeycomb, so I'm glad to see that that made the cut. Are there any H-comb features you're looking forward to seeing on phones? Anything you think should be in there but may not be?
