Microsoft hasn't been completely forthcoming with Windows Phone 7 sales numbers, saying only that manufacturers sold 1.5 million devices to retail in six weeks. Things still haven't changed on that front, and I'm not sure it will, but LG doesn't seem to mind shedding a little light on the situation. In a recent interview, James Choi, marketing strategy and planning team director at LG, explained that WP7's visibility is a little lower than expected, although the OS is perfect for a "huge segment" because it's easy to figure out and use. In fact, WP7 may be so easy, Choi says, that it's a little boring for more tech-savvy folks, which could be a problem. Don't think that LG will be abandoning Microsoft and WP7, though, because Choi says that it's important for his company to not lean too heavily on one mobile OS. Plus, he said, some operators feel that there's a little "too much Android" out there, so a balance of OSes is good.
It seems obvious that Windows Phone 7 isn't doing quite as well as Microsoft would've hoped, but I imagine things will pick up a bit once the NoDo update arrives and Verizon/Sprint launch CDMA handsets. In the mean time, good on LG for sticking with WP7 even if it hasn't met expectations. The mobile market is seemingly dominated by two or three OSes right now, and we need others like WP7 and webOS to keep going and continue to bring competition to the more dominant platforms.
