Right on schedule, Samsung's update to fix the fingerprint security issue with the Galaxy S10 and Note 10 has begun rolling out.
Samsung is now sending out an update to the Galaxy S10, S10+, S10 5G, Note 10, and Note 10+ that will improve the biometric authentication of the devices (via Reuters). Last week, it was discovered that some third-party silicone screen protectors could cause an issue with the in-display fingerprint sensor on these devices, letting anyone unlock the phone even if their fingerprint wasn't registered with the phone.
A notification for the update is being sent out to Galaxy S10 and Note 10 owners who have registered their fingerprint on their phone. "Samsung Electronics takes the security of products very seriously and will make sure to strengthen security through continuing improvement and updates to enhance biometric authentication functions," Samsung says in its Samsung Members app.
The update appears to already be rolling out in South Korea, but most other folks should be getting it soon. In a notification sent to users that was spotted by Android Police, Samsung says that the update is being sent to S10 and Note 10 owners gradually and that users who registered a fingerprint on theri device will get a notification within 24 hours. The notification for this update cannot be dismissed until you install the update.
Fingerprint sensors are used to help users lock their phone and protect sensitive data, like banking info, on a smartphone. That's why this issue with the Galaxy S10 and Note 10 and third-party silicone screen protectors is such a big deal. The good news is that Samsung has begun pushing out an update to fix the issue just like it said it would. If you've got a Galaxy S10 or Note 10 series device, be on the lookout for this update.
