Less than one year after embracing the notch with the Nokia X6, HMD Global has adopted the hole-punch display with its newest phone.
The Nokia X71 features a 6.39-inch FHD+ display with a 19.3:9 aspect ratio and a hole-punch in its upper left corner. That hole-punch gives the Nokia X71's 16MP selfie camera a place to live while also allowing HMD to slim down the phone's bezels, giving it a 93 percent screen-to-body ratio.
Around back is a triple rear camera setup that includes a 48MP ZEISS-certified sensor. It includes an f/1.8 aperture, and HMD touts that its 1.6μm large pixel size lets in 2.5 times more light to help you shoot better low-light photos. There's also an 8MP ultra wide angle camera with 120-degree field of view and a 5MP depth-sensing camera to help you snap those popular portrait mode photos with blurry backgrounds. A fingerprint reader is located below the rear cameras.
The body of the Nokia X71 features 2.5D glass on both sides and a metal frame to help give it a more premium look. HMD has added a notification light to the power button on the side of the X71, too, which can help alert you to unread messages, missed calls, and more, all without you having to pick your phone up.
Inside that glass and metal shell is a Snapdragon 660 processor, 6GB of RAM, and 128GB of built-in storage, along with a microSD card slot if you want more storage. A 3500mAh battery is included, and there's 18W fast charging support to help you refill that battery more quickly. USB-C and 3.5mm ports are here as well, and the X71 comes preloaded with Android 9 Pie.
The Nokia X71 will launch in Taiwan on April 30th for 11,900 TWD ($386 USD), says GSMArena, but there's no word yet on when or if the X71 will make its way outside of Taiwan. Rumors say it could launch internationally as the Nokia 8.1 Plus.
With its slim bezels, premium construction, and triple rear cameras, the Nokia X71 looks like it could be a solid option for folks in the market for a more affordable Android phone. Also of note is that HMD has been pretty good about regularly updating its Android phones, which is good when you carry your personal info around on your device. Now we'll have to wait and see if the Nokia X71 rolls out to more countries.
