Looks like the rumor that Xiaomi is working on a foldable phone is real.
Xiaomi president Lin Bin today posted a brief video showing a foldable smartphone. The device actually folds twice, once on each side of the screen, to transform from a tablet-sized device into a small phone. In the video, we can see a video playing and adapting to the smaller screen size as the device is folded.

The Xiaomi president does note that this device is just an engineering model, so it doesn't sound like it'll be launching to the public in the imminent future. He also explains that Xiaomi overcame several technical issues to get this device where it is, including the flexible folding screen technology, flexible cover technology, and adapting the MIUI software.
This foldable Xiaomi phone looks like the best folding smartphone we've seen so far. It transforms from a tablet to a compact phone just like you'd want from a foldable device, and the software appears to adapt to the phone being folded pretty well in this brief demo. We don't know when we might see more of this foldable Xiaomi phone, but hopefully it's soon.
