One week after Samsung introduced the Galaxy A8s with a hole-punch display, Huawei has announced its own phone with a hole in the screen.
The Huawei Nova 4 features a 6.4-inch 2310x1080 display, and there's a hole in the upper left corner of that screen for the 25MP front-facing camera with beauty AI and face recognition support. Since there's a hole-punch here, there's no notch to be found, though the Nova 4 does have a small forehead and a chin.
One of the other notable features of the Huawei Nova 4 is around back. There's a triple rear camera setup on this device that includes a 48MP main camera with f/1.8 aperture and a 16MP super wide angle camera with f/2.2 aperture. There's a 2MP depth of field snapper included, too, so that you can take those trendy portrait mode photos.
Inside the Nova 4, Huawei has included an octa-core Kirin 970 processor, 8GB of RAM, and 128GB of built-in storage. There's a 3750mAh battery in there as well, and a rear fingerprint reader. The software is Android 9.0 Pie running below Huawei's custom EMUI 9.0.1 user interface.
Huawei will launch the Nova 4 in China at a price of 3,399 yuan, or around $493 USD. There will be a cheaper model that'll cost 3,099 yuan, or around $449 USD, and swaps the 48MP rear camera for a 20MP snapper.
It's starting to look like 2019 might be the year of the hole-punch smartphones. We saw a lot of devices with notches in 2018, but now Android device makers are starting to experiment with the hole-punch as a way to offer a full-screen smartphone design without a notch jutting out at the center of the top of the screen. It's expected that Samsung will use a hole-punch design on its Galaxy S10 phones next year, and don't be surprised if we see many other devices use that design in 2019 as well.
What do you think of the hole-punch design?
