Lots of companies are getting in on virtual reality lately, including Google, Samsung, and HTC. Now we can add one more name to that list.
Huawei VR is a new virtual reality headset from Huawei. The unit looks similar to Samsung’s Gear VR in that it’s a mobile device that you slot a smartphone into. Huawei VR will be available in three versions that support the new P9 and P9 Plus as well as the Mate 8.
Once you’ve got your phone popped in to the Huawei VR, you can use the headset’s touch panel, back button, and volume keys to navigate the user interface. The Huawei VR offers 20ms latency, a 95-degree field of view, and an anti-blue light filter to help protect your eyes. One highlight feature of the Huawei VR is 360-degree sound, and Huawei says that its VR headset is the first to offer it.
At launch, Huawei VR will include more than 4000 free movies, over 350 panoramic images, over 150 panoramic tours, and more than 40 games.
There’s been a heavy focus on virtual reality lately, so it’s not surprising to see more companies getting in on the action. And while HTC Vive and Oculus Rift are powerful headsets, devices like the Huawei VR and Samsung Gear VR are more accessible for most folks because they don’t require a high-powered gaming PC to use. Instead, you simply pop in your phone and you’re ready to go, no matter if you’re at home or out and about. They’re also more affordable than the Vive and Rift, though Huawei hasn’t yet announced a price or launch date for its VR headset. However, the Gear VR costs $99, and it wouldn’t be a shock to see the Huawei VR priced similarly.
