This morning Nokia dropped its official second quarter 2012 financial report, and overall there seems to be a mixture of some positive and some not-so-positive news in the figures. On the financial side of things, Nokia reports that it earned $7.542 billion EUR from net sales, which works out to around $9.2 billion U.S. dollars. However, Nokia also reported an operating loss of $826 million EUR, or $1.013 billion USD.
In hardware news, Nokia reports that shipments of Lumia devices grew quarter to quarter to finish at 4 million in the second quarter. Mobile phone shipments also grew quarter-over-quarter and year-over year, finishing Q2 2012 at 73 million units. Nokia didn't see terribly great numbers when it comes specifically to North America, though, reporting shipments of just 600,000 phones to the U.S. and Canada in the second quarter. In total, Nokia says that it shipped 83.7 million phones in the quarter.
Nokia CEO Stephen Elop admitted that the second quarter was "difficult" for his company, but he added that Nokia employees are determined to become more competitive and to carefully manage its financial resources. However, Elop also said that he expects the third quarter to "remain difficult" for Nokia. He also said that it's critical that Nokia bring its Devices & Services division to a positive operating cash flow as soon as possible. It's still not clear exactly when Windows Phone 8 will arrive and bring new Nokia Lumia hardware with it, but it'll be interesting to see if whatever Nokia has up its sleeve can help to post some improved numbers, especially here in North America.
