Stuff gets delayed all the time. And sometimes, if the public is lucky enough, the company behind the delayed project will come forward and actually explain why the product was delayed. But, more often than not, a company will simply act like nothing out of the ordinary is happening, and just stay quiet. And sadly, perhaps nothing out of the ordinary is happening. For Motorola, staying quiet on the Droid Bionic was the path they chose, leaving plenty of speculation to be laid out on the table. But now the Bionic is back, bringing some new things along with it. Question is, was it worth the wait?
The original Droid Bionic from Motorola was one of the most anticipated devices at the Consumer Electronics Show this year, and with its 4G LTE-connectivity from Verizon, there were plenty of people eagerly waiting to get their hands on it. Features wise, the original Bionic featured a 4.3-inch qHD display, a 1GHz dual-core Tegra processor, and 512MB of RAM. There was an 8MP camera around back and a VGA shooter up front. The device would be shipped with 16GB of storage. And Motorola was including the latest version of MOTOBLUR (the latest version back then, of course).
But while the changes haven't been confirmed by Motorola quite yet, the word on the street is that the new Bionic is taking several cues from the new Droid 3. Specifically, the MOTOBLUR (or just BLUR) isn't the same version we saw at CES 2011, but has been updated yet again. As for general changes, there doesn't seem to be any word on the internals, other than it looks like the Bionic will feature the same Tegra dual-core processor. If the internal storage and 512MB of RAM are changing, there's been no specific mention yet. The biggest change seems to be coming from the display, as Motorola has apparently thought bigger is better. The new Bionic will reportedly feature a 4.5-inch qHD display with a resolution of 540x960. And of course, there's still the 4G LTE-connectivity.
The Bionic is said to be launching with Android 2.3.4, but there's no word from Motorola or Verizon when the device will actually launch. There's no surprise there, considering the Droid 3 was leaked and leaked again, before it just popped up for sale. As I mentioned above, I can't help but wonder if all of the changes were worth the wait. It's worth pointing out that the new BLUR looks better than ever before, and the fact it isn't in-your-face is great. If Motorola has changed anything internally, hopefully it means more RAM, and maybe even more storage.
"Newer is always better," some might say, and they are probably right. After all, other than Motorola and Verizon suggesting "soon" as a release date for the Bionic back at CES, no official or permanent release date was ever given. And there are still a few weeks in the summer season, so the rumors for the new release dates may pan out. While people have been waiting for the Bionic, the "upgrades" to the device may make it well worth the wait. Or, some may say that there aren't enough changes to warrant such a long wait, and may have already jumped ship to another device. Even the changes to the body of the device may be enough for some people to be more excited for it now then they were before.
Where do you stand? We're you waiting for the Bionic, but couldn't wait anymore? And if so, what did you get instead? Or are you still waiting for the smartphone, and are you even more excited for these purported changes? Let me know in the comments below.
