The month of May is coming to an end, meaning we need to reflect on some of the best apps to hit the App Store during the month. Let’s not waste any time, let’s get started.
The first app is the Google Assistant, Google’s powerful digital assistant that is found in the latest version of Android and inside Google’s Home Speaker is finally available on iOS. It can do all sorts of things like give you the weather, perform math equations, set reminders, and much more. But to get the most out of it, I highly recommend you add the Google Assistant widget and move it to the top of the list so it’s just a couple of swipes away from you at all times.
The Fidget Spinner game just had to make it on the list due to its immense popularity. It is the top iPhone app in the App Store right now and the game is just ridiculously simple. You just have to swipe to spin the Fidget Spinner. You get about 4 attempts to reach the x2 marker. There’s different power ups and effects you can add. I think, overall, it’s pretty fun. If you’re in school where fidget spinners are banned, you might want to check out this app to get your fidget spinning fix.
Audm is a great app to have if you love journalism. While it does cost about $7/month, you do get a free trial to test this app out. What it offers is long form articles that can be read yourself or listened to and what’s neat is that each article can be read aloud word for word by celebrated audiobook narrators. It’s not choppy or read aloud by a robot. Real skilled people are reading these stories aloud.
Starry is just a fun app to have for all ages. The app has several different clips from famous movies like Home Alone and Anchorman. Once you give the app permission to your microphone and camera, it’ll record and embed your face over the main actor’s face in each clip. Then, after it renders, you can save it and share it with your friends.
Fastlane: Road to Revenge is my favorite racing game to hit the App Store this past month. The controls include holding your finger on the screen to move your car around the screen and fire at enemy targets. The more you progress, the harder the game becomes. The game also has a pretty strong emphasis on music. It actually suggests that you use headphones to get the most out of it. So between the fast-paced action that is involved with the game mechanics and the pretty decent soundtrack, you’re bound to have a good time.
Blink is a neat note-taking application. There are no lists. Everything you jot down is displayed here and it’s only separated by a semi-transparent line. To get rid of stuff, you can double tap to archive it or long press and hit delete. If you like lists, you’re not going to like this app. But for those of you who just want an app that will allow you to quickly write down reminders and notes, then you might like Blink.
Punchline is the best jokes app on the App Store or so they claim. Jokes are retrieved automatically from your favorite joke subReddits. Simply swipe down on the screen to load another random joke. You can tap the star on the top left to save a joke to your favorites list where you can then view it again at any time. You can also tap the joke on the favorites screen to view it in full once again. And the speaker button at the bottom is for text to speech. There’s a lot of information there. If you’re a big jokester, you should definitely look into Punchline. You can learn some new jokes and get a good laugh.
Sleep Orbit is one of the highest rated health and fitness applications to hit the App Store this month. The app lets you mix and match as many sounds together as you like. Since it employs 3D sound with headphones, the sounds will orbit around your head randomly, that is if you like. You can definitely take control manually to customize the sound. But there’s a ton of different categories to choose from and even more effects to choose from. You should absolutely look into Sleep Orbit if you have trouble sleeping or are looking for ways to destress.
Hanx Writer is similar to Blink in the sense that it lets you write down whatever it is on your mind. But what’s unique about Hanx Writer is it does so in a nostalgic form. The app will imitate the experience you’d get from typing from an old fashioned typewriter, everything from the sound effects to the keyboard and fonts. You can even change the typewriter you are using, which will change the look and sound.
The last app on the list is Jeopardy: World Tour. I don’t know about you but I grew up watching Jeopardy. While I can usually answer a handful of questions, I still love the concept and the challenge. This game will let you connect with your friends so you can play along with them. And if you don’t want to connect with Facebook, you can always just play by yourself as a guest and compete against other players.
