Nearly two months ago, a rumor claimed that Samsung is working on a smart speaker to compete with the likes of the Amazon Echo and Google Home. Now Samsung has gone ahead and confirmed that rumor.
Samsung is working on a smart speaker device, says DJ Koh, president of Samsung’s mobile group. “Maybe soon we will announce it. I am already working on it,” Koh told CNBC. “As I mentioned I wanted to provide a fruitful user experience at home with Samsung devices, and I want to be moving quite heavily on it.”
Koh didn’t drop any other details about Samsung’s smart speaker, so it’s unclear when it’ll launch or whether it’ll be powered by Bixby, Samsung’s new digital assistant.
Amazon, Apple, and Google are already in the smart speaker market or will be joining it soon, so it makes sense that Samsung would investigate a smart speaker of its own. We’ll just have to wait and see if Samsung actually does come to market with the smart speaker that it’s working on, and if it does, how the company makes its device stand out from the competition.
