With AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile all offering unlimited data plans, some Verizon customers may be hoping that they’ll see a similar plan from their carrier. Unfortunately for them, it doesn’t look like that’ll happen.
Verizon CFO Fran Shammo says that his company doesn’t plan on offering an unlimited data plan like its competitors. “At the end of the day, people don’t need unlimited plans,” Shammo said, explaining that, “You can not make money on an unlimited video world.”
Shammo also pointed to heavy users as a reason that Verizon won’t offer unlimited data, saying that the customers that are attracted to unlimited plans “tend to be abusive” with how they consume data.
This news is likely disappointing for Verizon customers, but it’s also not exactly surprising. Shammo has said in the past that Verizon is “not going to entertain unlimited,” and it doesn’t appear that that’s going to change any time soon.
Verizon stopped offering unlimited years ago, but it does allow customers that were previously on the plan to be grandfathered. Keeping a grandfathered unlimited plan isn’t cheap, though, with Verizon having raised the price to $49.99 per month last year.
