Huawei is a major player in the Android world, but according to a new report, the company is also working on its own mobile operating system.
Sources speaking to The Information say that Huawei is secretly working on its own mobile OS so that they’re not totally dependent on Android. It’s said that Huawei execs are worried what might happen if Google were to make major changes to Android in the future, like if it were to stop supporting third-party devices or place restrictions on what other companies could do to the OS. If any major changes were to take place, Huawei could switch to its own OS.
As it stands right now, Huawei’s mobile OS is still in early days, and it’s being developed by a team that includes former Nokia engineers. Unfortunately, there’s little else known about the OS.
One thing that’s worth noting is that it’s possible that Huawei’s OS may never actually see the light of day. So long as Google keeps on keepin’ on with Android the way it is, and so long as Huawei can keep using it with its custom EMUI skin — which is expected to get a new version this fall — it’s likely that Huawei will continue on with Android. There’s been no indication that Google will be making huge changes to the way Android works, and it seems unlikely that any big changes that would necessitate Huawei to roll out its OS are coming, but Huawei wants to feel like it’s got a backup plan just in case.
